16′ Dacron Canoe

This was a very fun project. Just to test the technique, I built this 16′ canoe. It weighs 19 lbs!

All the stringers and rubraile were cut from one spruce 2×8. The interior frame and steamed white oak.

The fabric is shrinkable aircraft dacron. It shrinks about 10% at about 150 degrees and that’s how it gets tensioned.

Easy to carry, easy to paddle, bad on oyster shells and in the wind!
